Pastor
C.R. Stam was brought up in a home where the Bible was read before every
meal and at bedtime. His father, Peter Stam, Sr., was the founder of
the Star of Hope Mission in Paterson, NJ, a widely known Bible teaching
center, which brought some of the greatest teachers of the past generation.
As a youth, therefore, Stam was often in the company of outstanding
Bible teachers, listening to their discussions and observing their differences
of opinion. In his 20s and 30s, he labored first as a volunteer and
finally full-time with his father at the Star of Hope.
He also served for
13 years as pastor of Preakness (NJ) Community Church (now Preakness
Bible Church) and conducted several other Bible classes weekly until
the Worldwide Grace Testimony of Chicago engaged him to travel the U.S.
in conference work. As the “grace movement” grew in America,
Stam was called to Milwaukee, WI, where he joined Pastor Charles F.
Baker in establishing the Milwaukee Bible Institute (now Grace Bible
College of Grand Rapids, MI.) For five years he served as Dean with
Mr. Baker as President, both serving also as instructors.
During all this
time Stam had been publishing the Berean Searchlight, a monthly Bible
study magazine for believers launched during his pastorate in New Jersey.
With the growth of this ministry, the Berean Bible Society was organized
and additional methods were employed to propagate the gospel of the
grace of God. In 1952, Pastor Stam resigned his position at Milwaukee
Bible Institute and moved with the Berean Bible Society to Chicago,
where he continued as President of the Society and as editor of the
Berean Searchlight, later succeeding the great evangelist, Pastor J.
C. O’Hair, for a time as pastor of Chicago’s North Shore
Church.
Under Pastor Stam’s
leadership the ministry of Berean Bible Society has come to reach millions
regularly with the truth of God’s Word. Over the years, Stam authored
many Bible study books which 'til this day remain in wide circulation.
Stam's Bible study magazine, the Berean Searchlight, continues to be
internationally distributed. In 2003, Pastor Stam went home to be with
the Lord. The Berean Bible Society continues to faithfully persevere
in the Bible literature and training ministry under the direction of
Pastor Paul Sadler.
